Instagram Assignment

An Instagram short film from Thomas Jullien on Vimeo.

Thomas Jullien posted the above video to Vimeo. It is a fun video and clearly took him a lot of time. A fun classroom activity might be to have students on a field trip upload their pictures to instagram and then crowd sourcing from the class photos have students create a video of the day. Getting the perspective of other classmates, valuing the contributions of others, and the ability to create something they could not have done on their own.

I just made something really quick to try it out before I try it with students.

Step 1

Have students take pictures on their phones or mobile devices.

Step 2

Have the students upload their photos to instagram with a common hashtag. Note, this project does not have to use instagram. The photos could be uploaded to Google Plus or just a Google Drive or Dropbox folder.

If you had them upload the photos to Instagram this website lets you search hashtags on Instagram.

Download the pictures by right clicking on the photos and choosing to “Save Image As.”

Step 3

It is clear that Jullien spent a lot of time creating creating his video, but given limited time and resources sometimes a quick and dirty approach is good enough. I used the YouTube photo slideshow.

YouTube video

Click on Upload in YouTube and choose Photo Slideshow on the right hand side.

Step 4

Choose a 1 second transition and turn off the slide effect.

I would like a quicker transition than 1 second to make the video more fast paced, but this was fairly easy to accomplish.
