Lesson Design Matters

Occasionally you will see an article about tech being the $1000 pencil or a hoax. Tools do not teach kids. How you use the tools matter. If we are using technology to do the same paper tasks we should not expect to see any improvements in learning or engagement. Sure, the first time they use a new app or website they are excited. However, is that genuine learning engagement or just excitement with something new?

The definition of insanity is to do the same things and expect different results.

There is no virtue in being paperless if we want to use tech to improve learning and increase motivation we have to challenge ourselves with what we are asking the students to do.

Some Questions

  • How does this help me to have improved interactions with students?
  • How does this aid in collaboration?
  • How does this give more students choices, so each student is not necessarily doing the same thing?
  • How does this help provide more authentic learning experiences?
  • How does this connect my students outside the four walls?
  • How does this allow for creative thinking?
  • How does this go beyond memorization strategies or comprehension strategies?
  • Does this collect data?
  • Is there a way for students to get immediate feedback?
  • Does it have gamification elements?
