Teaching Math with Google Apps Workshop

Guest Post by Liz Byers

On Saturday, September 23rd Alice will present a very special engagement of Teaching Math with Google Apps, the workshop she developed with her friend and co-author Diana Herrington. Diana passed away very unexpectedly in May, leaving those who loved and admired her at a loss for how to fill her shoes. Diana was a passionate educator and mathematics education advocate who loved helping her students find the best possible way to make math come alive for their students and to look at teaching math in a whole new light. Mrs. Herrington taught high school math for 30 years. Even her last week of teaching before she retired she was purchasing toys for her classroom so students could model mathematics. She achieved a 96% passage rate in AP Calc by assigning fewer problems and instead having conversations with students about math. Diana has a theorem named after her at NASA, she was the chief lead writer for almost every math exam for the state of California and was the recipient of the Presidental Blue Ribbon award in the field of teaching mathematics; she was the only non science teacher to win Science Fair Coach of the Year, and she won the Central Valley Computer Using Educators teacher of the year award.

More about the workshop:

Teaching math in the 21st century is different, it asks students to be critical thinkers, model their math, critique the reasoning of others, and to analyze. Many of the math problems we have traditionally been using have literally become obsolete as a result of modern technology. This is a gift! This workshop models ways we can use Google Apps to make this shift.

This event is sponsored by San Gabriel Valley CUE, and all proceeds will go to benefit the Diana Herrington scholarship endowment fund.
